Yes, this is a cheap, low-end microphone. However, among mics in its class, this is actually quite good. I have been using this exact mic, ordered from Office Depot, in my office for three or four years now.
The people I record stand above the mic, with their heads roughly 3 feet from it. At that distance, speaking at a normal conversational volume, their words are clearly picked up and easily understandable. People with especially quiet voices may need to be a bit closer to the mic or speak a bit louder, but on average, I get what I need on the first take.
Being a budget mic, this does have the same issue as other mics in its class in terms of picking up background noise or hiss. It also has a limited tonal range, again like all mics in this class. The background noise can easily be cleaned up with a simple noise filter, using a program such as Audacity (free). The result is actually quite impressive for a mic this inexpensive.
Things to keep in mind about this mic:
This is an analog mic, and suffers the same issues as *any* analog mic will.
If you experience problems with low volume, you may want to check your recording levels, and ensure that "Mic boost" is enabled. Mic boost is necessary for non-amplified analog mics like this, or you will hear next to nothing when you record.
This is also a directional mic, so it is best used when the tip is aimed directly at the recording source. It is also advisable to speak *past* the mic, rather than directly into it, or you'll end up with far too much extra noise.
This mic does not produce amazing, studio-level sound quality (such as the Shure Beta 58A I use in my home studio), but for its class, it is surprisingly good.

It is not worth $8. I am returning to find a better one. Was hoping to find a simple one, not professional, not high expectations. You have to put your mouth right up to the mic and talk loud to be able to hear the recording. When I spoke a normal tone with my mouth only inches from mic you can't hear the recording.
